EXAMINE THE NATURE OF UNBORN AWARENESS

Dear Readers,

Have a read about:

EXAMINE THE NATURE OF UNBORN AWARENESS

"FIRST, LEARN THE PRELIMINARIES. What are the preliminaries? These are the preliminaries. First: truth is. Truth is not something to be created, truth is not something that is far away. Truth is herenow, truth surrounds you like the ocean surrounds the fish. The fish may not be aware -- once the fish becomes aware of the ocean, the fish is enlightened. The fish is not aware, cannot be aware, because the fish is born in the ocean, has always lived in the ocean, is part of the ocean as any wave is part of the ocean. The fish is also a wave -- a little more solid, but born out of the ocean, lives in the ocean and one day disappears in the ocean. The fish may never come to know about the ocean. To know something, a little distance is needed. To know something, perspective is needed. And the ocean is so close, that's why the fish may not be aware of it. And so is the case with truth, or if you like you can use the word god. So is the case with god. It is not that he is far away, and that's why we don't know about him; it is because he is not far away but very close by. Even to say that it is close by is not right, because you are it. He is within you and without: he is all and all. This is the first thing that has to be allowed to sink deep in your heart: truth already is, we are in it. This is the most fundamental thing to begin with. You are not to discover it; it is not covered. All that is needed is a new kind of awareness which is missing in you. Truth is there, but you are not aware, you are not mindful, you are not alert. You don't know how to watch, you don't know how to observe, you don't know how to look and see. You have eyes but still you are blind, you have ears but you are deaf. The first preliminary is: truth is.
The second preliminary is: mind is the barrier. Nothing else is hindering you from truth, just your own mind. Mind surrounds you like a film, like a movie that goes on and on, and you remain engrossed in it, fascinated by it. It is a fantasy that surrounds you, a continuous story that goes on and on. And because you are so fascinated by it, you go on missing that which is. And mind is not; it is only a fantasy, it is only a faculty for dreaming. Mind is nothing but dreams and dreams -- dreams of the past, dreams of the future, dreams of how things should be, dreams of great ambitions, achievements. Dreams and desires, that is the stuff mind is made of. But it surrounds you like a China Wall. And because of it the fish remains unaware of the ocean. So the second preliminary is: mind is the only barrier.
And the third: no-mind is the door. Atisha calls no-mind BODHICHITTA: that is his word for no-mind. It can be translated as buddha-mind, buddha-consciousness, too. Or if you like you can call it christ-consciousness, krishna-consciousness. It doesn't make any difference what name is used, but the basic quality of bodhichitta is that it is no-mind. It looks paradoxical: the mind in the state of no-mind. But the meaning is very clear: mind without content, mind without thoughts, is what is meant, is what is indicated. Remember the word bodhichitta, because Atisha says the whole effort of religion, the whole science of religion, is nothing but an endeavor to create bodhichitta, buddhaconsciousness: a mind which functions as a no-mind, a mind which dreams no more, thinks no more, a mind which is just awareness, pure awareness. These are the preliminaries."

"THINK THAT ALL PHENOMENA ARE LIKE DREAMS.... Now the work starts. Atisha is very condensed, seedlike. That is the meaning of a sutra: it is just a thread, just a hint, and then you have to decode it. THINK THAT ALL PHENOMENA ARE LIKE DREAMS. "Phenomena" means all that you see, all that you experience. All that can ever be experienced is all phenomena. Remember, not only are the objects of the world phenomena and dreams, but also objects of consciousness. They may be objects of the world, they may be just objects of the mind. They may be great spiritual experiences. You may see kundalini rising in you: that too is a phenomenon -- a beautiful dream, a very sweet dream, but it is a dream all the same. You may see great light flooding your being, but that light is also a phenomenon. You may see lotuses blooming inside you and a great fragrance arising within your being: those too are phenomena, because you are always the seer and never the seen, always the experiencer and never the experienced, always the witness and never the witnessed. All that can be witnessed, seen, observed, is phenomena. Material phenomena, psychological phenomena, spiritual phenomena -- they are all the same. There is no need to make any distinction. The basic thing to remember is: that which can be seen is a dream."
"THINK THAT ALL PHENOMENA ARE DREAMS. This is a tremendously powerful technique. Start contemplating in this way: if you are walking on the street, contemplate that people passing by are all dreams. The shops and the shopkeepers and the customers and the people coming and going, all are dreams. The houses, the buses, the train, the airplane, all are dreams. You will be immediately surprised by something of tremendous import happening within you. The moment you think "All are dreams" suddenly, like a flash, one thing comes into your vision: "I am a dream too." Because if the seen is a dream, then who is this 'I'? If the object is a dream, then the subject is also a dream. If the object is false, how can the subject be the truth? Impossible. If you watch everything as a dream, suddenly you will find something slipping out of your being: the idea of the ego. This is the only way to drop the ego, and the simplest. Just try it -- meditate this way. Meditating this way again and again, one day the miracle happens: you look in, and the ego is not found there. The ego is a by-product, a by-product of the illusion that whatsoever you are seeing is true. If you think that objects are true, then the ego can exist; it is a by-product. If you think that objects are dreams, the ego disappears. And if you think continuously that all is a dream, then one day, in a dream in the night, you will be surprised: suddenly in the dream you will remember that this is a dream too! And immediately, as the remembrance happens, the dream will disappear. And for the first time you will experience yourself deep asleep, yet awake -- a very paradoxical experience, but of great benefit. Once you have seen your dream disappearing because you have become aware of the dream, your quality of consciousness will have a new flavor to it. The next morning you will wake up with a totally different quality you had never known before. You will wake up for the first time. Now you will know that all those other mornings were false; you were not really awake. The dreams continued -- the only difference was that in the night you were dreaming with eyes closed, in the day you were dreaming with eyes open. But if the dream has disappeared because awareness happened, suddenly you became aware in the dream.... And remember, awareness and dreaming cannot exist together. Here, awareness arises, and there, the dream disappears. When you become awake in your sleep, the next morning is going to be something so important that it is incomparable. Nothing like it has ever happened. Your eyes will be so clear, so transparent, and everything will look so psychedelic, so colorful, so alive. Even rocks will be felt to be breathing, pulsating; even rocks will have a heartbeat. When you are awake, the whole existence changes its quality. We are living in a dream. We are asleep, even when we think we are awake."

"THINK THAT ALL PHENOMENA ARE LIKE DREAMS. First, objects will lose their objectivity. And second, the subject will lose its subjectivity. And that brings you to a transcendence. The object is no longer important, the subject is no longer important, then what is left? A transcendental consciousness: bodhichitta -- just a witnessing, with no idea of 'I' and 'thou'; just a pure mirror which reflects that which is. And God is nothing but that which is."

"EXAMINE THE NATURE OF UNBORN AWARENESS. Now you know what awareness is. You have known this transcendental awareness where objects and subjects are no more existential. You have known for the first time this purity, this crystal-clear mirror. Now examine the nature of this awareness. Look into it, look deep into it. Shake yourself into as full alertness as possible. Wake up and see! And you will start laughing -- because now you will see there has never been a birth, and there is never going to be a death. This is unborn and undying consciousness. It has always been here. It is eternal, it is timeless. And how afraid you were of death, and how afraid you were of old age, and how afraid you were of a thousand and one things! And nothing has ever happened: all was a dream. Seeing this, one smiles, one laughs. Your whole life up to now has been ridiculous, absurd. You were unnecessarily afraid, unnecessarily greedy, unnecessarily suffering. You were living in a nightmare and it was your own creation"

SIDDHAS - WHO ARE THEY?

Dear Readers,

SIDDHAS -  THEIR LIVES AND TEACHINGS

SIDDHAS - WHO ARE THEY? – (2)

(SIDDHAR ARUT SELVAR T. GNANASAMBANDAN)

During one of my visits I asked my guru, "From time immemorial we have been hearing about many types of people who caused miracles with their psychic powers (siddhis). But only a few are called siddhas. Why is that?"

My preceptor replied that, "all those who use their siddhis are not siddhas. All those who become one with the Brahmam-rishi, muni or a baktha, they all have paranormal powers. But they all would prefer to retain their own titles and may not like to become siddhas". Understanding, controlling and functioning with their 'chittam' is the hallmark of siddhas (the Sanskrit 'cit' is untranslatable and the nearest rendering of 'cit' is conciousness. 'Chitta' is mental substance in Raja yoga and in Vedanta it is taken as the subconcious mind). In fact the siddhas are capable of going above their 'Chittam' and functioning at much higher a level. But they usually aim at staying and functioning as siddhas only.

This has been lucidly brought out by Bogar. "There are a number of people who can perform many tricks, after learning indrajal and mayajal. These imposters also call themselves siddhas! Here Bogar explains indrajal and mayajal in detail. In addition he has also written a number of poems about certain renowned siddhas. Talking of 18 siddhas, he clarifies that rishis and munis also have siddhis. Does it mean that the siddhas have more siddhis than others? Can one get 'moksa' through chittam? Then what does the word chittam actually mean? When we say that Thirumoolar had researched chittam in detail, a doubt comes to mind whether the other siddhas did a similar study of chittam or not?

The groups called "18 siddhas" were experts in 'Rasavadam' (alchemy). They had a thorough knowledge of the evolution and functions of the human body. They knew the ways and means of preserving the body from deterioration, and could foretell the time of death etc., even while moving around in their physical bodies. They knew anything and everything to do with the human body. Holding mercury and gold in their palms, they can prepare and dispense 'guru medicine'. They are capable of activating all the body chakras (plexuses) while in deep meditation. This is feasible when they merge and become one with the Brahamam. The 18 siddhas have such paranormal powers, that if they so decide, they can switch over and become a rishi or a muni. Similarly rishis and munis are also capable of changing over and can become a siddha. But they all prefer to stay in their own tribes and would like to be identified as rishis, munis or siddhas only. They loath changing over from one category to the other.

Here are some exceptions.

Konganavar was a siddha who had a hankering for earning the title of a rishi. He went to Chidambaram and started learing the intricacies of yoga. When he was busy experimenting the nada tattvas, their vibrations, their effectiveness and the related mantras, many rishis objected to it and hindered his endeavours. They discouraged him in every possible way. They scoffed at him saying things like, "why do you want to become a rishi? Stop meddling. Why are you not satisfied being a siddha?" Somehow Konganavar managed to overcome all those hurdles and became a rishi.

Pulasthiyar was a maharishi, whereas Kamala Muni and Maccha Muni were only munis, who conducted 'havans' strictly as laid down in the vedas. They first became siddhas by mastering transmutation (alchemy), vaidya sastra etc., but inspite of their siddha learning they preferred to stay as yogis only. Some yogis like Pathanjali Muni-he learned yoga and remained a yogi thereafter. Nandeeswara, the founder of nandivargam, orginally a yogi, qualified himself to become a siddha. Great masters like Pathanjali and Sanagadhi munis remain in samadhi only. Though they all are qualified to become siddhas, they like to reamin as yogis forever.

Each one of the 18 siddhas is an authority is a particular discipline. Once a dissertation is approved by the 'siddha sabha', one's findings would be diluted a little for easy understanding and handed down to the public for use.

Thus, each siddha belongs to a particular siddha sabha – which normally has many disciples. Each one of the 18 siddhas has published his findings, usually in cryptic verses, in a chosen field and is an ultimate authority in that subject. Rests of them are those who learned from them. The siddha disciples would go from one siddha-guru to the other and learn everything first hand. For instance, those who learn from Konganavar would also learn from Thirumoolar and Bogar. Like the soldiers learning the handling of different weapons and the art of war from various experts the siddha disciplea also get inculcated by many siddha-gurus. Now we know that it was Thirumoolar who did intense research and revealed a number of unkonwn facts about the "pancha bootha tattvas".

We have already been told about the existense of the two siddha schools, Nandi and the Thirumoolar vargams. Before we go into the details of the Moolan vargam, it behoves us to know about its founder Thirumoolar and some of the supernatural events he was responsible for.

Thirumoolar was orginally a disciple of Nandi! Afer the completion of his training, while travelling in south india, forced by circumstances, he entered the body of a cow-herd called Moolan, by metempsychosis (transmigration of the soul) and later came to be known as Thirumoolar. He trained under Agasthiya for a period and after getting his blessings started his county wide prechings. It is an axiom that he remained in samadhi for 3000yeas and during that period wrote one poem each year. Thus came into being the Tamil treatise called 'Thirumandiram'.

"How many years, in all did he spend in samadhi if he took 3000 years to write Thirumandiram alone?" is the question. In 'Saiva siddhantam' it is clearly given that Thirumoolar lived for about 8000 years. That is to say he was alive for about 5000 years before he wrote Thirumandiram. It is believed that he was alive during both Ramayana and Mahabharatha periods!

While Thirumoolar was travelling from north to south (Ramayana period) during his sojourns he used to spend many years at a stretch in one place. When the Mahabharatha was came to an end, Lord Krishna was killed by a hunter and the semi burnt body of His was recovered from a nearby river. Later a monument was erected and consecreted, which subsequently came to be known as Puri Jaganatha temple. During that period Thirumoolar was present in Puri as per the Saiva Siddhantam accounts.

Thirumoolar led a simple life. Both Nandi and Agasthya had a soft corner for him because of his unassuming attitude and simplicity. When he saw some of the cown grieving for their cow-herd Moolan, he entered the body of Moolan just to give solace to the cows. This incident alone speaks volumes about his kind heartedness and simplicity. Though he preferred to stay in samadhi, he spent maximum time with the common folk. He used to travel through the air-and sometimes through the space.

These points along with some more interesting facts which I will be sharing with you in future about Thirumoolar were all given to me by my guru. Thirumoolar was never in favour of using siddhis for getting thigs done, though he was quite capable of it. Mostly he spent his time treating patients, giving discourses and correcting temple rituals etc., He wanted people to get close to him so he never showed off his supernatural powers. He was mostly worried about getting a bloated ego, which could have caused his spiritual downfall. Thirumoolar wrote a medical treatise called ' KARUKKIDAI VAIDYAM' and also authored many other books including 'MOOLAN MUNNOORU'.

People are always on the run to get something or the other because of 'maya'. Maya and Jyothi – that is Maya and Gnanam (GYAN) cannot be separated nor can they be done away with. To lead a happy life one need all the creature comforts. One may lead a luxurious life but one should not drown oneself in it find happiness. But that happiness should not bring in misery, so limit your enjoyments to that extent only. What is the limit of enjoyment? If you can enjoy without losing yourself in your happiness, without taking for granted that it is all yours and without having any attachment to anything, then you are well within your limits. Such an enjoyment will not cause any misery.

We stay with our relatives, we accept their hospitality, we use their household articles like TV, fridge etc., But we do not have any right to own any of them. Similarly we have come to this world, a creation of the lord, where we can enjoy within the limits, but have no rights to own anything. Where such an attitude exists, ther will not be any unhappiness and jnanam increases as well. Instead when we start claiming the mountains, rivers and justify the possession of the other created things, it leads to the beginning of selfishness.

We go for a walk in the garden. We may enjoy the scenery, the flora and the fauna, the gentle breeze etc., but may not consider the ownership of the garden. Selfishness starts when one thinks, "I want that plant". Then follows the ideas of watering, fencing and the safe guarding of 'that' property, which would result in attachment. Thirumoolar had explained a number of methods to get rid of such selfish notions.

"This world is not meant for me. I must return to my original abode after enjoying my short stay, without any attachment", should be tha aim of each human being. For instance, we do not linger around the office after working hours. We go there only to work. In the evenings we drop everything as they are and go home to our near and dear ones. The same is applicable to our lives – both birth and death. Nothing is permanent. We should always bear it in mind that, "I have a permanent place and somehow I must return to it at the earliest".

How to go about it has been explained by Thirumoolar in his books. He narrates the story of evolution and then continues to discuss the 'nada-vindu tattva'. Then about the 'Akasa tattva' – akasa representing intellect. Men can read, understand and learn about many things. Like the akasa the intellect is vast. Then comes 'Vayu'. This vayu is known as 'Manas'. When intellect reaches the vayu stage it becomes manas. Both vayu and manas are not visible. We may talk about them but can not see them.

After these tattvas comes 'Agni' tattva. What does agni tattva signify? ….

Is Religion Causing Problems?

Question : some of the biggest challenges facing the world today are the problems caused by religions. What is the solution for this?

Answer : It as not a problem of religion. The problem caused by irreligion in the guise of religion. We have to find what religion actually is. Real religion does not mean a Hindu, a Muslim, a Jew, a Christian, Zoroastrian, Jain, or Buddhist. These can be very much social, ethnic, or egoistic identities. Real religion is that process which awakens one’s love for God. Where there is the awakening of love for God, there are the qualities of tolerance, peace, compassion, mercy, self control, and forgiveness; these are the universal qualities of anyone who loves God. Where we find sectarianism, envy or cruelty that is not religion.

If any of these people who fight really understood what is really in their scriptures, they wouldn’t behave with another person based on external beliefs. When a man comes home, sometimes he is dressed in a three piece suit; sometimes he comes in a swimming suit; sometimes he comes in his pajamas. Now, his dog will recognize his master in whatever dress he wears. Isn’t that true? So if our master is God, whether He appears as Krishna, Allah, Rama, or Christ, we will recognize Him in all these different appearances.

Jeeva Samadhi

Dear Readers,

Pls have a read about Jeeva Samadhi:

Jeeva Samadhi or Adhishtanam or Brindavanam is the tomb of a Hindu Spiritual Guru or a saint. It is believed that the saint's life force still exists in the tomb and prayers are offered to it.

"Brindavanam" is the term used for Vaishanavaite saints and Adishtanam for the rest of them. It is called as Jeeva Samadhi in Tamil Nadu, mainly with reference to Siddhars. There are hundreds of them spread all over India. In case of shaivaite saints , a Shiva linga is placed over the tomb and for vaishanavaite saints, the sacred Tulsi tree is planted.

In this concept, by spiritual practices, life is not allowed to go out of the body. The seed cells in the body never get damaged. Such a person stops the functions of the body after completion of his or her mission by his or her own will. Gnani will fix his or her mind with the Almighty and stop functioning. The body is then buried. That body will never decay whether it is thousand or ten thousand years, because the magnetic force in the body itself acts as a life force in the body. As "unseen masters" or "invisible helpers" they guide the human race to wisdom.

It is believed that this force remains forever and the time limit for the Samadhi status depends upon the saint's bio-magnetic strength, which may vary in terms of hundreds of years. Until then, the soul in samadhi stage will continue to bless the devotees. The place around such Jeeva Samadhi has very high spiritual magnetic force. It can be sensed by the gnana aspirant. If these places are maintained properly, they become energy banks supplying the needful.

Powers of siddhars

Dear Readers,

The siddhars are believed to have had powers both major and other 'minor' powers. They are explained in detail in various yogic as well as religious texts.[6] They also have the power converting their mass to energy and thereby travel in space in light speed to different universe.

  1. Anima (shrinking) -- Power of becoming the size of an atom and entering the smallest beings
  2. Mahima (illimitability) -- Power of becoming mighty and co-extensive with the universe. The power of increasing one's size without limit
  3. Lagima (lightness) -- Capacity to be quite light though big in size
  4. Garima (weight) -- Capacity to weigh heavy, though seemingly small size
  5. Prapthi (fulfillment of desires) -- Capacity to enter all the worlds from Brahma Loga to the nether world. It is the power of attaining everything desired
  6. Prakasysm (irresistible will) -- Power of disembodying and entering into other bodies (metempsychosis) and going to heaven and enjoying what everyone aspires for, simply from where he stays
  7. Isithavam (supremacy) -- Have the creative power of god and control over the sun, the moon and the elements
  8. Vasithavam (dominion over the elements) -- Power of control over kings and gods. The power of changing the course of nature and assuming any form

These eight are the Great Siddhis (Ashtama siddhis), or Great Perfections.[7]

Who are Siddhars ??

Siddhars (Tamil: சித்தர்) are saints in India, mostly of the Saivaite denomination in Tamil Nadu, who professed and practised an unorthodox type of Sadhana, or spiritual practice, to attain liberation. Yogic powers called Siddhis are acquired by constant practice of certain yogic disciplines. Those who acquire these Siddhis are called Siddhas.[1] These sidhars can be compared to Mystics of the western civilization. Siddhars are people who are believed to control and transcend the barriers of time and space by meditation (Yoga), after the use of substances called Rasayanas that transform the body to make it potentially deathless, and a particular breathing-practice, a type of Pranayama. Through their practices they are believed to have reached stages of insight which enabled them to tune into the powers hidden in various material substances and practices, useful for suffering and ignorant mankind. Typically Siddhars were saints, doctors, alchemists and mysticists all at once. They wrote their findings, in the form of poems in Tamil language, on palm leaves which are collected and stored in what are known today as Palm leaf manuscript, today still owned by private families in Tamil Nadu and handed down through the generations, as well as public institutions such as Universities all over the world (India, Germany, Great Britain, U.S.A.).[2]

In this way Siddhars developed, among other branches of a vast knowledge-system, what is now known as Siddha medicine, practised mainly in Tamil Nadu as Traditional native medicine. A rustic form of healing that is similar to Siddha medicine has since been practised by experienced elderly in the villages of Tamil Nadu. (This has been misunderstood as Paatti Vaitthiyam, Naattu marunthu and Mooligai marutthuvam. While paati vaitthiyam or naatu marunthu is traditional Tamil medicine and mooligai marutthuvam is ayurvedic medicine.) They are also founders of Varmam - a martial art for self-defence and medical treatment at the same time. Varmam are specific points located in the human body which when pressed in different ways can give various results, such as disabling an attacker in self-defence, or balancing a physical condition as an easy first-aid medical treatment.

Tamil Siddhars were the first to develop pulse-reading ("naadi paarththal" in Tamil) to identify the origin of diseases. This method was later copied and used in ayurvedha.[3]

Siddhars have also written many religious poems. It is believed that most of them have lived for ages, in a mystic mountain called Sathuragiri, near Thanipparai village in Tamil Nadu.

One of the best-known Siddhars was Agasthyar or Agasthya, who is believed to be the founding father of Siddha culture.

Abithana Chintamani states Siddhars are either of the 9 or 18 persons enlisted, but sage Agastyar states that there are many who precede these and follow 9 or 18 persons. Many of the great Siddhars are regarded to have powers magical and spiritual.
